P0171 means the engine is running lean on bank 1 — too much air, not enough fuel — and the ECU has run out of room to compensate. The overwhelming majority are caused by unmetered air getting in through a vacuum leak, or by a dirty mass airflow sensor under-reporting how much air is entering. Both are usually cheap to fix.
What Does P0171 Mean?
P0171 is System Too Lean (Bank 1). “Lean” means the air-fuel ratio contains more air than the engine wants — the ideal for a petrol engine is roughly 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel.
The car does not set this code the moment the mixture drifts. The ECU continuously adjusts fuelling using fuel trim: if the oxygen sensor reports a lean mixture, the ECU adds fuel. Short-term fuel trim handles moment-to-moment corrections; long-term fuel trim is the learned, running average.
P0171 appears when that correction hits its limit — typically when long-term fuel trim has been pushed beyond about +25% and the mixture is still lean. In other words, the engine has been quietly compensating for a problem for some time, and has finally run out of adjustment.
Bank 1 is the side of the engine with cylinder 1. On an inline engine that is the entire engine. P0174 is the same fault on bank 2. - A leaking or stuck PCV system. The positive crankcase ventilation valve is a deliberate, metered vacuum leak. When it sticks open or its hose splits, it becomes an unmetered one.
- Weak fuel delivery. A tired fuel pump, a clogged filter or a failing pressure regulator means the injectors cannot supply what the ECU is asking for.
- Dirty fuel injectors. Carbon deposits restrict flow, leaning out the mixture.
- An exhaust leak before the oxygen sensor. Fresh air drawn into a cracked manifold reaches the upstream sensor, which reports lean even though the mixture in the cylinder is correct.

1. Read the fuel trim values
This single step tells you more than anything else. With a scan tool showing live data, compare long-term fuel trim at idle and at around 2,500 rpm:
- High at idle, much better at higher rpm — a vacuum leak. A fixed-size leak matters far less once large volumes of air are flowing.
- High across the whole rev range — MAF sensor, fuel pressure or injectors.
- Worse at higher rpm and under load — fuel delivery. The engine cannot get enough fuel when demand rises.
2. Inspect the intake for leaks
Work along everything between the air filter and the cylinder head. Squeeze each hose; cracks frequently open only when the rubber is flexed. Check that the intake boot is properly seated and that no clamps have worked loose. Pay attention to any hose that has been disturbed by recent work.
3. Test for leaks properly
A short burst of carburettor cleaner or propane around a suspected joint will make the idle speed change if air is being drawn in there. A smoke test — where a workshop pumps harmless vapour into the intake and looks for where it escapes — is more reliable and finds leaks that spray testing misses.
Intake spray testing involves flammable liquids around a running engine. Use very short bursts, keep clear of hot exhaust parts, keep a fire extinguisher within reach, and never spray into an open engine bay you cannot immediately step away from.
4. Inspect and clean the MAF sensor
Remove the sensor and look at the fine wire or film element. If it is visibly dirty, clean it with a dedicated MAF cleaner — never with brake cleaner, a cloth or compressed air, all of which will destroy it. Clear the codes afterwards and re-check fuel trim.
5. Check fuel pressure
If the intake is sound and the MAF is clean, measure fuel pressure against specification, both at idle and under load. Low pressure under load points at the pump or the filter.

Because vacuum leaks and dirty MAF sensors dominate the causes, most P0171 repairs land at the cheap end. Resist replacing the oxygen sensor first — it is reporting the problem, not causing it.
Can I Drive With P0171?
For short journeys, yes. A mild lean condition will not strand you. But a lean mixture burns hotter than a correct one, and over time that heat damages exhaust valves, pistons and the catalytic converter. If the engine is also misfiring, the risk to the converter rises sharply. Treat it as something to fix within weeks, not months.
If P0171 appears together with P0300, deal with it promptly — a lean misfire is one of the fastest ways to damage a converter, and can eventually lead to P0420 as well.
