P0442 means the car found a small leak in its evaporative emission (EVAP) system — the sealed circuit that stops fuel vapour escaping from your tank. A loose, worn or wrong fuel cap causes a large share of these codes and costs almost nothing to rule out. The car is safe to drive and will feel completely normal, but it will fail an emissions test.
What Does P0442 Mean?
P0442 is Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (Small Leak). To understand it you need to know that your fuel tank is not open to the atmosphere.
Petrol evaporates constantly, and those vapours are both a pollutant and a fire risk. So the tank is sealed into a closed circuit called the EVAP system: vapour travels to a charcoal canister where it is stored, and when conditions are right the engine opens a purge valve and draws those stored vapours into the intake to be burned as fuel.
Because the circuit has to be sealed, the car tests it. This is one of the quietest codes there is. In most cases the only sign is the light.
- Check engine light on — steady. The car drives completely normally.

How to Diagnose P0442
1. Deal with the fuel cap first
Remove it, look closely at the rubber seal for cracks, flat spots or hardening, wipe the filler neck sealing surface clean, and refit the cap until it clicks at least three times. If the seal looks at all tired, just replace the cap — an original-equipment cap is inexpensive and rules out the most likely cause completely.
Then clear the code and drive normally. The EVAP monitor will not run immediately, so give it several days.
The EVAP self-test only runs under quite narrow conditions: typically a cold start, fuel level between about a quarter and three quarters of a tank, and a moderate ambient temperature. 3. Test the purge valve

4. Get a smoke test
This is the definitive method and the reason small EVAP leaks are usually a workshop job. A smoke machine fills the sealed system with harmless vapour at very low pressure, and the leak reveals itself as a visible wisp. Finding a 1 mm hole any other way is largely guesswork, and a smoke test typically costs less than one wrongly replaced part.

One habit that causes this code
Do not keep squeezing fuel in after the pump clicks off. “Topping up” pushes liquid petrol into the charcoal canister, which is designed for vapour only. A saturated canister does not work properly and eventually needs replacing — an entirely self-inflicted several-hundred-dollar repair.
Can I Drive With P0442?
Yes. P0442 is purely an emissions fault. It does not affect how the car runs, it will not leave you stranded, and it does not damage anything mechanical. The two real consequences are that you will fail an emissions or roadworthiness test, and that the check engine light is now occupied — so it cannot warn you about the next, more serious fault that comes along. That second point is the reason not to simply live with it.
Do treat it more urgently if you can smell fuel inside or around the car. A smell strong enough to notice suggests something larger than a small leak, and raw fuel is a fire risk regardless of what the code says.
Note also that a steady light is very different from a flashing one. P0442 will never flash the light.
