A quick test that separates the two biggest groups: at a safe, steady speed on a clear road, shift to neutral and let the car coast. If the vibration continues, it is coming from the wheels, tyres or driveline. If it disappears, it is engine or transmission related.
1. Engine Misfire
The most common cause of shaking that appears under load. A cylinder failing to fire properly makes the engine deliver power unevenly, and you feel that as a shudder that worsens the harder you push.

It depends entirely on the cause, and two of them are genuinely urgent. A failing CV joint can separate, which on a front-wheel-drive car means losing drive and potentially steering control. An unbalanced wheel or mild torque converter shudder is not dangerous, though the first accelerates suspension and tyre wear. A misfire is safe to drive briefly if the light is steady, and a stop-driving fault if it is flashing.
