Brakes give plenty of warning before they fail, and the warnings are easy to read once you know what each one sounds and feels like. This is also the system where the tolerance for putting a job off is lowest.
What Usually Goes Wrong
Squealing and grinding
Wear indicators, glazed pads, and the metal-on-metal grinding that means the pads are already gone.
Soft or sinking pedal
Air in the lines, a failing master cylinder, or a fluid leak — all of which need attention before the next drive.
Pulling and uneven braking
